How to block NSFW on Discord
To block NSFW on Discord, open User Settings → Content & Social and set the sensitive media filters to Block for direct messages and Blur for servers. Discord doesn’t let you block flagged images in servers yourself; that part belongs to each server’s owner.
Then deal with where adult content actually sits on Discord: age-restricted servers and channels, and messages from people you don’t know. Discord changed a lot in 2026 by sorting every account into an age group, so that’s covered too.
Quick answer: In User Settings → Content & Social, set Mature Sexual Media to Block for DMs from friends and from others, and Blur for server channels. Leave age-restricted servers, keep Message Requests on, and on iPhone keep Allow access to age-restricted servers on iOS off.
1. Set the sensitive media filters
Discord checks images and videos with two filters, Mature Sexual Media and Graphic Media. Each has its own setting for three places: direct messages from friends, direct messages from others, and server channels. For adult accounts, Discord’s defaults are:
- DMs from friends: Show
- DMs from others: Block
- Server channels: Show
So an adult account shows flagged images from friends and in every server until you change it.
On desktop or in a browser
- Click the gear icon next to your name at the bottom left to open User Settings.
- Choose Content & Social.
- In the sensitive media filters, under Mature Sexual Media, set Direct messages from friends and Direct messages from others to Block, and Messages in server channels to Blur.
- Set Graphic Media the same way if you want it too.
On iPhone or Android
- Tap your profile icon at the bottom right, then the gear at the top right.
- Tap Content & Social and make the same choices.
Discord says Blur applies to old and new media, while Block only applies to media sent from then on.
What it catches: images and videos that Discord’s system flags as sexual.
What it misses: text, voice and calls, which the filters don’t scan, and anything the system gets wrong; Discord says no automated system is perfect. In servers you can only blur, and a blur is one tap from open.
How easy to undo: for adults, it’s the same menu.
Steps from Discord Support: Discord Sensitive Content Filters (edited 22 Sep 2026) and Safer Messaging on Discord, checked 14 October 2026. Discord’s newest help screenshots label some of these sections Content Filters and Messaging Permissions, so the names in your app version may differ.
2. Check your age group (Discord’s 2026 changes)
Discord now places every account in an age group: teen, adult or unconfirmed. Most accounts are placed automatically by an age estimation model, and you can see yours in User Settings → Account Status (on mobile, from app version 343.0).
Teen and unconfirmed accounts get stricter defaults, which only confirming you’re an adult can loosen:
- Flagged images are blurred in DMs from friends and in servers, and blocked in DMs from others.
- Age-restricted servers and channels can’t be opened.
- Age-restricted app commands are off.
- Message Requests are on, so messages from non-friends land in a separate inbox.
Local law adds its own rules in the UK, Australia, Brazil and Texas. In the UK, for example, every account keeps these protections until the person confirms they’re an adult.
If your account shows unconfirmed, these protections already apply to you, and Discord says you don’t need to confirm your age just to keep using it. Discord may still place you in the adult group automatically later, so set the filters in step 1 anyway.

3. Stay out of age-restricted servers and channels
Discord requires adult content to sit behind an age-restricted label. Owners mark channels, servers built around adult content must be marked, and Discord marks them itself if owners don’t. Opening one shows a warning first.
- Leave servers that pull you in. On desktop, right-click the server icon and choose Leave Server. On mobile, press and hold the server icon and look for Leave Server in its menu.
- On iPhone, keep Allow access to age-restricted servers on iOS off. It’s off by default and sits with the content filter settings. Discord treats it as an extra step adults must take on iOS, so leaving it off keeps those servers closed in the iPhone app.
- Keep Allow access to age-restricted commands from apps in DMs off, in your direct message settings.
- Mute and hide channels you can’t leave. Mute a channel with the bell icon at the top right, then click the server name and choose Hide Muted Channels.
What it catches: the servers and channels you leave or hide, and age-restricted servers in the iPhone app.
What it misses: adult images posted in ordinary channels, which only the filters in step 1 and the server’s owner can deal with.
How easy to undo: leaving holds best, because you’d need a new invite to get back in.
From Discord Support: Age-Restricted Channels and Content and What are Age-Restricted Servers on Discord? (edited 22 Sep 2026), the Guilds FAQ (leaving a server on desktop) and How do I hide muted channels?, checked 14 October 2026. The mobile Leave Server path isn’t in Discord’s help.
4. Limit who can message you
Messages from strangers are a common way explicit images arrive uninvited. Two settings cut that down:
- Turn off DMs from server members. In User Settings → Content & Social, turn off Direct messages (under Social permissions on desktop, Server Settings on mobile). When Discord asks whether to apply it to all your existing servers, say yes.
- Keep Message Requests on. Messages from people you’re not friends with go to a separate inbox. Until you accept, you can preview the text, but images and files aren’t shown and links can’t be opened.
From Discord Support: Blocking & Privacy Settings and Message Requests (edited 22 Sep 2026), checked 14 October 2026.
If you run a server
Owners can turn on the Explicit image filter in Server Settings → Moderation → Safety Setup. It blocks messages that may contain explicit images in every channel that isn’t age-restricted, for all members or only members without roles.
What Discord’s settings can’t do
Discord’s filters look at images and videos, not voice chats, calls or text. In servers, you can only blur. For an adult account, every setting here is a menu away, with no PIN or waiting period. They make Discord calmer on an ordinary day; they aren’t built to hold on a bad night.
Where a phone-wide blocker helps, and where it doesn’t
We make QUIT, so weigh this section with that in mind. QUIT doesn’t block Discord or see your messages. Images on Discord come through Discord’s own servers, so no website filter, ours included, can sort them. What QUIT covers:
- Links out of Discord. On Android, QUIT blocks known adult sites in every browser and app, so a link posted in a server doesn’t open one. On iPhone, it turns on Apple’s own adult-website filter.
- A switch that takes a day. On Android, Strict Mode makes turning protection off a request that unlocks after 24 hours, or sooner if a partner you trust approves. On iPhone, a delete lock stops QUIT being removed on impulse.
- Help when an urge hits. The Panic Button walks you through a few minutes of slow breathing with your companion. Urges usually pass within minutes if you don’t act on them; our free urge timer does the same in your browser.
To set up everything else on your phone, start with how to block porn on any device, and keep the 10-minute urge plan for the moments a filter can’t reach.
Questions people ask
How do I block NSFW images in Discord DMs?
Open User Settings → Content & Social and set the Mature Sexual Media filter to Block for direct messages from friends and from others. Discord says Block only applies to images sent from then on, while Blur also covers older ones.
Can I block NSFW in Discord servers?
Not fully by yourself. In server channels, adults can only choose Show or Blur; blocking explicit images in a server is its owner’s setting. Leaving the server is the option that holds.
What does the unconfirmed age group mean on Discord?
Discord hasn’t placed your account in the teen or adult group yet. Until it does, you get the teen protections: flagged media blurred or blocked, age-restricted servers and channels locked, and Message Requests on. You can see your status in User Settings → Account Status.
Does Discord’s filter check voice, calls or text?
No. Discord says its sensitive content filters only look at images and videos, and don’t scan text messages, voice or calls.
Does QUIT block Discord?
No. QUIT doesn’t block Discord or read your messages. On Android it blocks adult sites that links lead to, in every browser and app; on iPhone it turns on Apple’s adult-website filter. Use Discord’s own filters for what’s inside it.
