Urge timer: breathe through it in 90 seconds

3 min read · Updated 14 October 2026

Most porn urges peak and fade within minutes if you don’t act on them. Press start, breathe with the fox for 90 seconds, and let this one pass.

Urge right now?

Breathe with the fox for 90 seconds: in for 4, hold for 4, out for 6.

No account. Nothing is saved or sent.

Breathe out

For the next few minutes, pick one:

  • Cold water. Splash your face, or hold something cold for a minute.
  • Move. A short walk, or just change rooms. Leave the phone behind if you can.
  • Write one line. What set this off: the time, the place, the mood? Paper is fine.
  • Text someone. “Rough night, talk for a minute?” is enough.

Already slipped? What to do next

Quick answer: to stop a porn urge, don’t fight it and don’t obey it. Breathe slowly for about 90 seconds with a long out-breath, notice where you feel the urge, then change rooms and put off the decision. Most urges peak and fade within minutes.

How to use the urge timer

  1. Press start, wherever you are. No account, no sign-up. If you can, sit or stand somewhere other than where the urge started.
  2. Follow the circle. Breathe out for 6 to begin, then in for 4, hold for 4, out for 6. Six slow breaths take you to 90 seconds. Your screen stays on while the timer runs.
  3. Watch the urge, don’t argue with it. Notice where you feel it: chest, stomach, hands. Give it a number from 1 to 10 at the start, and again at the end.
  4. Do one thing when the timer ends. Cold water, a short walk, one line on paper, or a text to someone. Anything that gets you out of the room the urge started in.

Why ride it out instead of fighting it

This is what psychologists call urge surfing. It comes from relapse-prevention work by psychologist G. Alan Marlatt: instead of obeying an urge or wrestling with it, you watch it with curiosity and let it rise and fall on its own. Fighting an urge tends to keep your attention on it. Watching it gives you something to do while it peaks.

The breathing isn’t magic, and it won’t make the urge vanish. It gives your attention a job for the minute and a half when the urge is loudest, and it puts a gap between the urge and whatever you do next. Most of the time, that gap is enough.

Why in 4, hold 4, out 6, and not 4-7-8?

It’s the rhythm of the Panic Button in the QUIT app, so practising here makes it familiar on your phone. 4-7-8 breathing (in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8) is popular too, but the long hold can feel hard when you’re wound up. Any slow rhythm with an out-breath longer than the in-breath works. Use the one you’ll actually do.

When the urge comes back

Urges often come in waves on the same night. That doesn’t mean the first 90 seconds failed. Press Breathe again, then use the longer plan: the 10-minute plan for riding out a porn urge adds changing rooms, putting off the decision and checking whether you’re hungry, angry, lonely or tired.

If you’re doing NoFap or counting days, every urge you ride out is part of the streak. See where your streak stands. Then make the next urge easier by closing the easy path before it arrives: how to block porn on your devices.

The same button, in your pocket

In the QUIT app, the Panic Button is one tap from the home screen. While you breathe, it shows your own reasons for quitting and how long you’ve been clean, and your fox coach is there if you want to talk. QUIT is on Google Play now, with the button below, and the iPhone app is in App Store review.

Questions people ask

How long does a porn urge last?

There’s no fixed number, but urges usually peak and fade within minutes when you don’t act on them. They often come back in waves on the same night. That’s normal: ride the next one out the same way.

What is urge surfing?

A technique from relapse-prevention work by psychologist G. Alan Marlatt. Instead of obeying an urge or fighting it, you notice it with curiosity (where it sits in your body, how strong it is) and let it rise and fall on its own.

How do I stop urges on NoFap?

You can’t stop urges from arriving, but you can stop obeying them. Breathe through the peak, change rooms, put off the decision, and make porn harder to reach before the next one. A slip restarts a streak; it doesn’t erase the days you built.

What if the urge is still strong after 90 seconds?

Press Breathe again, then do something physical: cold water on your face, a fast walk, 20 push-ups. If it keeps coming back tonight, follow the 10-minute plan for riding out an urge.

Is anything saved or sent?

No. The timer runs in your browser. It needs no account and saves nothing, and closing the page clears it.
