Private DNS porn blocker: the free filter, tested

8 min read · Updated 14 October 2026

Android has a free, phone-wide porn filter built in, and most people never find it. It’s called Private DNS. Point it at a family-safe DNS service and adult sites stop loading in every browser and app, on Wi-Fi and on mobile data.

We tested four free family filters to see what each one actually blocks. They are not the same, and the differences matter.

Quick answer: In Settings, search for Private DNS, choose Private DNS provider hostname and enter family.adguard-dns.com. In our test it blocked adult sites and also forced SafeSearch on Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo, plus Restricted Mode on YouTube.

How a DNS filter blocks porn

Before your phone opens any website, it asks a DNS server for the site’s address. A family-safe DNS server refuses to give out the address of adult sites, so they simply don’t load. For search engines it does something cleverer: it sends your phone to the “safe” version of Google, Bing or YouTube, so explicit results are filtered and the setting can’t be switched off from the search page.

Which filter to use: our test results

On 6 October 2026 we asked each filter for the addresses of two major adult sites and a set of everyday sites, and recorded what came back.

None of them blocked Reddit except CleanBrowsing Family, and none of the others blocked VPN websites. All four hostnames accepted secure connections on the port Android uses.

  • Best for most people: AdGuard Family. It covers the three places porn most often slips through first: search, image search and YouTube.
  • Strictest: CleanBrowsing Family. It also blocks Reddit entirely and VPN sites. Good if those are your weak spots, annoying if you use Reddit for anything else.
  • If you need normal YouTube: Cloudflare for Families or CleanBrowsing Adult. Both block adult sites and lock SafeSearch, but leave YouTube alone.

How to set up Private DNS on Android

  1. Open Settings and type Private DNS in the search bar. Or go there directly: on Samsung, Connections → More connection settings → Private DNS; on Pixel, Network & internet → Private DNS; on Xiaomi, Connection & sharing → Private DNS.
  2. Choose Private DNS provider hostname.
  3. Enter the hostname of the filter you picked, for example family.adguard-dns.com, exactly as written: no https://, no slash.
  4. Tap Save. If Android warns that it can’t connect, check the spelling.

Check your browser isn’t skipping it

Some browsers have their own “secure DNS” setting. If it’s set to a different provider, that browser can ignore your Private DNS. In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Use secure DNS and choose to use your current service provider. In other browsers, look for a DNS over HTTPS setting and set it to the default or off.

What Private DNS can’t block

A DNS filter is a good free first layer. It is not a wall, and it helps to know where the gaps are before a bad night finds them for you.

  • Explicit content on sites it allows. Social media, some forums and messaging apps carry adult content on domains the filter has to leave open.
  • New sites. Filters work from lists. New sites appear every day, and lists catch up later.
  • You, at 1am. Switching Private DNS off takes three taps, nothing slows you down, and nobody is told. In practice this is the gap that matters most.

Making it harder to undo

We make QUIT Porn Blocker, so weigh this section with that in mind. QUIT filters DNS on your phone like the services above, and adds what a settings switch can’t: Strict Mode turns “switch it off” into a request that unlocks after 24 hours, or sooner if a partner you trust approves. It also locks SafeSearch, notices when protection is weakened, and gives you a panic button for the moment itself.

One thing if you switch: QUIT does its own filtering, so set Private DNS back to Off or Automatic when you turn QUIT on. A Private DNS hostname stops QUIT’s shield from working, and the app tells you if one is set.

Whatever you use, set it up when you’re calm, decide your rules then, and tell one person. Then read how to ride out an urge, because blocking removes the easy path but not the urge.

Questions people ask

Is Private DNS free?

Yes. Private DNS is built into Android 9 and later, and the family filters from Cloudflare, AdGuard and CleanBrowsing in this guide are free to use.

Does Private DNS work on mobile data as well as Wi-Fi?

Yes. Android uses your Private DNS setting on every network, so the filter follows the phone.

Does it block porn in incognito or private tabs?

Yes. Private DNS works below the browser, so private tabs and every app on the phone go through the same filter.

Can the DNS provider see what I browse?

It sees the names of the sites your phone looks up, not the pages or what you type. Pick a provider whose privacy policy you are comfortable with.

Will it slow my phone down?

Not noticeably. A DNS lookup takes milliseconds, and these providers run servers worldwide.
