Canopy alternatives for adults

10 min read · Updated 14 October 2026

Canopy is an AI content filter built for parents that now also sells itself to adults quitting porn, with a human or AI “Ally” who must approve any change to your settings; plans start at $8.33 a month billed yearly for one device. If you’re an adult blocking porn for yourself, the main alternatives are a free filter built into your phone, Covenant Eyes if you want someone to see your screen, BlockerX for a wide blocker with a free version, and QUIT (ours) for a phone blocker with help through urges.

Quick answer: Canopy’s selling points are AI filtering of images inside apps and social feeds, and an approval step that makes it hard to weaken on impulse. Look elsewhere if you want something built for adults rather than families, if you don’t want your content checked on a company’s servers, or if you’d rather not pay per device.

Who wrote this: we make QUIT Porn Blocker, one of the alternatives below. We haven’t used Canopy, so this isn’t a hands-on review. Every fact comes from Canopy’s own website and its store listings, checked on 14 October 2026 and linked at the end.

What Canopy is

Canopy is made by Netspark, Inc. It has two parts: the Canopy app, where you manage settings, and the Shield app, which goes on each device you want to protect.

  • AI filtering: it checks images, videos and pages as they load and removes explicit content, as well as blocking known adult sites. You can choose a filtering level, filter lingerie and swimwear, filter AI chatbots, and block apps and websites.
  • Built for families first: its pricing page calls it a digital parenting app. Sexting alerts (which watch the camera on the protected phone), location tracking and screen-time limits are aimed at children’s devices.
  • For adults: its adults page, last updated 13 October 2026, offers “self use” or an Ally. Canopy says it doesn’t need your browsing history and doesn’t send activity reports.
  • The Ally: a person you invite gets a text when you ask to lower your protection and approves or denies it with a tap. Or you can turn on AI Ally, which talks the request through with you and decides against the goals you set. Your Ally is also told about blocked content.
  • Removal prevention is included in every plan.
  • Platforms: iPhone and iPad, Android 12 or later, Mac, Windows (not ARM) and Chromebook. Canopy says features vary by platform.

Ratings: Main app: 3.8 on the App Store (about 1,600 ratings) and on Google Play (about 1,500 reviews). Android Shield app: 2.3 on Google Play (293 reviews).

How much does Canopy cost?

On 14 October 2026 the pricing page showed the same prices whether you chose “Myself” or “My Family”:

  • Essential: $8.33 a month, billed yearly (about $100 a year), for 1 device.
  • Plus: $9.99 a month, billed yearly (about $120 a year), for up to 3 devices.
  • Premium: $12.50 a month, billed yearly (about $150 a year), for up to 10 devices.
  • In the iPhone app: 1 device is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year; 3 devices $15.99 a month or $119.99 a year; 10 devices $19.99 a month or $149.99 a year.
  • Trial and refunds: a 7-day free trial, and a full refund if you ask within 30 days of creating your account.

Every plan has every feature, so you pay for the number of devices. One phone and one laptop already needs Plus.

Privacy: where filtering happens

  • On Android, the Shield app’s Google Play listing says it uses Android’s VPN feature so that content first passes through filters on Canopy’s remote servers. It also uses the Accessibility service, usage access and “draw over other apps”, and device-admin rights for optional uninstall protection.
  • Data: the Shield app’s data-safety form lists name, email, address, phone number, optional location, device IDs, app interactions and purchase history as collected, and installed apps as shared for app functionality. Data is encrypted in transit.
  • Reports: for adults, Canopy says your Ally gets no reports or logs, only requests to change settings and notices about blocked content.

What reviewers mention

From the reviews shown on its store pages on 14 October 2026: people praise how well it blocks adult content and its support team. Complaints in those reviews include blocking safe content, some apps and public Wi-Fi sign-in pages not working, slower internet, battery and data use, and banking apps having trouble. In September 2026 Canopy replied on Google Play that it was looking into filtering problems after an update.

Why adults look for an alternative

  • It’s built for parents. Many features and most of its testimonials are about protecting children, which can feel like the wrong fit for an adult working on their own habits.
  • Content goes through its servers on Android. Some people prefer a blocker that filters on the phone itself.
  • Per-device pricing. A phone and a computer cost more than one device.
  • Performance complaints. Slower internet and apps that stop working come up in its reviews, and the Android Shield app is rated 2.3.

Canopy alternatives for adults

Free first: your phone’s own filter

Android’s Private DNS setting and iPhone’s Screen Time adult-website filter block known adult sites for free. They don’t filter images inside social apps the way Canopy says it does, there’s no Ally, and switching them off takes a few taps. Use them as a first layer. How to set them up →

Covenant Eyes

The opposite approach to Canopy’s “no reports”: an ally reviews blurred screenshots of your screen, taken at least once a minute, and blocking is included. $18 a month or $198 a year on its website, for up to 10 people on unlimited devices. Its Google Play listings call it the best solution for Christians. Our full Covenant Eyes comparison →

Good fit if secrecy is what keeps you stuck and you have someone willing to look.

BlockerX

A wide blocker with 5M+ Google Play downloads and a free version with limits. It blocks sites, keywords, apps, gambling and social media and forces SafeSearch. Premium is $109.96 a year on its website and adds uninstall prevention on Android. Our full BlockerX review →

Good fit if you want to start free and block more than porn.

Accountable2You

$11 a month or $121 a year for one person. It doesn’t block anything; instead your partner sees your browsing, app and device activity as it happens, without screenshots, and is told about uninstalls or tampering.

Good fit if you want honest reporting to a partner rather than a filter.

QUIT (ours)

QUIT is the one we make, so weigh this with that in mind. It’s built only for adults blocking porn for themselves, never as parental control.

  • Blocking on the phone: on Android, adult sites are blocked in every browser and app, and filtering happens on the phone, so your browsing is never sent to us. On iPhone it uses Apple’s own Screen Time adult-website filter, plus an optional delete lock.
  • Strict Mode: switching protection off is a request that unlocks after 24 hours, or sooner if a partner you choose approves. Most urges pass within minutes.
  • Help with the urge itself: a panic button, an AI coach, short audio lessons, an anonymous forum and an island that grows with every clean day.
  • Price: $49.99 a year after a 7-day free trial, or $9.99 a month, for your phone. No free version. On Google Play now, with the button below; the iPhone app is in App Store review.

Where Canopy is ahead: AI image filtering inside apps and feeds, computers and Chromebooks, and one plan for a whole family.

If you leave Canopy

Canopy’s FAQ says deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Set up your next tool first, then cancel.

  1. Cancel where you subscribed: in the Canopy app, on your Canopy web dashboard, or in the app store you paid through.
  2. On iPhone, if you paid through Apple: Settings → your name → Subscriptions, choose Canopy, then Cancel Subscription.
  3. On Android, if you paid through Google Play: open your subscriptions in Google Play, choose Canopy and tap Cancel subscription.
  4. Ask for a refund within 30 days of creating your account if Canopy wasn’t right for you, as its money-back guarantee allows.

How much does Canopy cost?

On 14 October 2026, Canopy’s website listed $8.33 a month for 1 device, $9.99 for up to 3 and $12.50 for up to 10, all billed yearly (about $100, $120 and $150 a year). In the iPhone app, 1 device is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Every plan has a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Is Canopy only for parents?

No, but it was built for them. Its pricing page still calls it a digital parenting app, and features such as sexting alerts and location tracking are aimed at children’s phones. It now also has a page for adults, with a human or AI “Ally” who approves changes to your settings.

Does Canopy see my browsing?

Canopy says it doesn’t require sharing your browsing history and doesn’t send activity reports to adults’ partners. Its Android Shield listing does say that content is checked by filters on Canopy’s remote servers.

Does Canopy have an accountability partner?

Yes. You can invite a person, who approves or denies requests to lower your protection by text, or use AI Ally, which reviews those requests against the goals you set. Both are included in every plan.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Canopy?

Your phone’s own filter is free: Private DNS on Android and Screen Time on iPhone. Among paid apps, BlockerX has a limited free version, and QUIT (ours) is $49.99 a year. Accountable2You is $121 a year but reports activity rather than blocking.
