QUITTR review: is it safe, is it free, and the alternatives

11 min read · Updated 14 October 2026

QUITTR is a popular quit-porn recovery app, rated 4.7 from about 33,800 App Store ratings, and you need a subscription (from $19.99 a year) for full access. In 2026 it had a widely reported data exposure, and on 14 October 2026 its website showed a parking page, although the app was still listed on both stores.

Quick answer: Free? No, a subscription is needed. Safe? 404 Media reported that a database misconfiguration exposed sensitive data from hundreds of thousands of users; QUITTR says it’s fixed, and its Google Play form still says data isn’t encrypted. Alternatives: Brainbuddy for a similar recovery app; Canopy, BlockerX or QUIT (ours) for blocking; Covenant Eyes for screen accountability.

Who wrote this: we make QUIT Porn Blocker, and QUIT and QUITTR solve a similar problem, so we are a competitor. We haven’t used QUITTR, so this isn’t a hands-on review. It’s a summary of public facts: QUITTR’s store listings, an archived copy of its website, and 404 Media’s reporting, all checked on 14 October 2026 and linked at the end.

What QUITTR is

QUITTR is a recovery app more than a blocker. According to its store listings and its archived website (last captured 28 July 2026):

  • Program: a structured 90-day program, daily exercises, meditations and lessons, and a “Life Tree” that grows with your progress.
  • Help in the moment: a panic button and an AI coach called Melius.
  • Community: a forum for sharing wins and staying accountable.
  • Blocking: its Google Play listing says it uses Android’s Accessibility service to detect and block the apps and web content you choose. A separate QUITTR Chrome extension blocks adult sites. We couldn’t find a vendor explanation of how blocking works on iPhone.
  • Platforms: iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or later), Android, and the Chrome extension.

Ratings: 4.7 on the App Store (about 33,800 ratings); 4.6 on Google Play (about 15,000 reviews, 100K+ downloads).

Is QUITTR free?

No. The app is free to download, but its App Store listing says a QUITTR subscription is required for full access. The listing mentions a free trial without giving its length. On 14 October 2026 the App Store showed these purchases:

  • Monthly: $9.99 or $14.99
  • Yearly: $19.99 or $29.99
  • Lifetime: $49.99

The price you see may depend on the offer shown to you. Even the higher yearly price is lower than most of the apps compared below.

Is QUITTR safe? The 2026 data exposure

Here is what was reported, in order. We’ve kept to what the sources say.

  • 28 January 2026: 404 Media reported that an unnamed quit-porn app had exposed users’ intimate data, including age, how often they masturbate and how porn makes them feel. It said many users appeared to be minors.
  • 10 March 2026: 404 Media named the app as QUITTR, reporting that it had exposed this data for hundreds of thousands of users.
  • 6 April 2026: 404 Media reported that three security researchers had warned QUITTR, starting in July 2025, about a Google Firebase misconfiguration; that the founder at first denied there was a vulnerability; and that the issue was fixed some time before 10 March.
  • June 2026: in replies to App Store reviews, QUITTR said the database misconfiguration reported earlier in the year was “thoroughly addressed” and that it had strengthened its security.

What its store listings say about data today (filled in by the developer, read on 14 October 2026):

  • Google Play: “Data isn’t encrypted”, meaning the developer declares that data isn’t sent over a secure connection. It lists device IDs, app interactions and crash data shared with other companies for analytics, and collects name, email, user IDs and optional health info. You can request deletion.
  • App Store: identifiers and usage data are listed as “used to track you”.

What we can’t tell you: whether QUITTR is secure today. We found no independent security review published after the fix. These forms are the developer’s own declarations and may not match how the app behaves.

QUITTR’s website in October 2026

Here’s exactly what we saw when we checked on 14 October 2026:

  • quittrapp.com showed a Namecheap parking page titled “quittrapp.com is registered at Namecheap”, listing other domains for sale. The secure (https) address didn’t load when we tried it.
  • The domain’s public registration record was updated on 13 October 2026. It still shows the original 2024 creation date and runs to September 2027, so the site may come back.
  • The last copy of the real site we found in the Internet Archive is from 28 July 2026.
  • Both store listings still link to quittrapp.com for QUITTR’s privacy policy, terms and support, so those pages can’t be read right now.
  • The app itself was still listed on the App Store (last updated 23 June 2026) and Google Play (last updated 1 June 2026).

We don’t know why the site is down, and the app may still work. We haven’t used it, so we can’t say.

What reviewers mention

From the reviews shown on its store pages on 14 October 2026: people praise the community, the tools for urges and the price. Complaints in those reviews include purchases (including lifetime) not unlocking, slow refunds and support, community features not working, and worries about data security.

How to cancel QUITTR and ask for your data

If you’re leaving, cancel through the store you paid with. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel the subscription.

  1. On iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Tap QUITTR and then Cancel Subscription. If there’s no Cancel button, it’s already cancelled.
  2. On Android: open your subscriptions in Google Play, choose QUITTR, tap Cancel subscription and follow the steps.
  3. Ask for your data to be deleted. QUITTR’s Google Play listing says you can request deletion. Look for a delete option in the app’s settings first, because its support email uses the parked domain.
  4. Set up your next tool before you remove the old one, so you’re never without support in a weak moment.

QUITTR alternatives

Free first: your phone’s own filter

Android’s Private DNS setting and iPhone’s Screen Time adult-website filter block known adult sites for free. They take a few taps to switch off and nobody is told, so they work best as a first layer. How to set them up →

Brainbuddy: the closest recovery app

Brainbuddy is the most similar app: a 100-day education program, daily exercises, a “Life Tree”, a community, group challenges and accountability teams. It’s rated 4.7 on both stores (about 26,000 App Store ratings and 30,900 Google Play reviews). A subscription is needed for all features after onboarding; App Store prices run from $2.99 to $99.99, with plan lengths not shown. It calls itself a content blocker, but its listing doesn’t say how blocking works.

Good fit if you liked QUITTR’s approach and want a long-running app in the same style.

Canopy: AI filtering with an approval step

Canopy filters images, videos and pages as they load, and a human partner or an “AI Ally” must approve any request to lower protection. From $8.33 a month billed yearly for one device. It started as a parental-control app. Our full Canopy comparison →

BlockerX: the widest blocker

Over 5 million Google Play downloads. It blocks adult sites, keywords, apps, gambling and social media, and forces SafeSearch. The free version has limits and ads; Premium is $109.96 a year on its website. Our full BlockerX review →

Covenant Eyes: a person sees your screen

An ally reviews blurred screenshots taken at least once a minute, with blocking included. $18 a month or $198 a year on its website, for up to 10 people. Our full Covenant Eyes comparison →

QUIT (ours)

QUIT is the one we make, so weigh this with that in mind. It has a similar heart to QUITTR (streaks, a panic button, an AI coach, audio lessons, an anonymous forum and an island that grows with clean days), with the blocker at the centre.

  • Blocking: on Android, adult sites are blocked in every browser and app, filtered on the phone, and your browsing is never sent to us. On iPhone it uses Apple’s own Screen Time adult-website filter, plus an optional delete lock.
  • Strict Mode: switching protection off is a request that unlocks after 24 hours, or sooner if your partner approves.
  • Price: $49.99 a year after a 7-day free trial, or $9.99 a month. No free version. On Google Play now, with the button below; the iPhone app is in App Store review.

Where QUITTR is ahead: it’s proven at scale with a large community today, and its yearly price is lower.

Questions to ask any quit-porn app

  • Where is my data stored, and is it encrypted? Read the Data safety section on Google Play or the App Privacy label on the App Store.
  • Does it actually block, and how? A streak counter doesn’t stop a search at 1am.
  • How easy is it to switch off in a weak moment? That’s when it matters.
  • What happens to my journal and chats? Are they used to train AI, shared, or sold?
  • Can I reach the company? Check that the website and support email work before you pay.

Questions people ask

Is QUITTR safe?

In 2026, 404 Media reported that a misconfigured database had exposed sensitive answers from hundreds of thousands of QUITTR users, and that researchers had warned the company for months before it was fixed. QUITTR later said in App Store replies that the problem was “thoroughly addressed”. Its Google Play data-safety form, filled in by the developer, still says data isn’t encrypted. Whether that is safe enough is your call; the facts and sources are on this page.

Is QUITTR free?

Not fully. It’s free to download, but its App Store listing says a subscription is required for full access. On 14 October 2026 the App Store listed $9.99 or $14.99 a month, $19.99 or $29.99 a year, and $49.99 for lifetime access.

Was QUITTR hacked?

404 Media didn’t describe a break-in. It reported a database misconfiguration that let researchers read user data, including ages and answers about porn use, and that the company fixed it some time before 10 March 2026. We haven’t seen reporting on whether anyone else accessed the data.

Is QUITTR shut down?

On 14 October 2026 QUITTR’s website, quittrapp.com, showed a domain-parking page, but the app was still listed on the App Store (last updated 23 June 2026) and Google Play (last updated 1 June 2026). We don’t know whether the app still works, because we haven’t used it.

What is a good QUITTR alternative?

For a similar recovery app, Brainbuddy is the closest. For blocking that is hard to switch off, look at Canopy, BlockerX or QUIT (ours). For a person who sees your screen, Covenant Eyes.
